What is your perception and small guns skill at? Use the pipe rifle at range, it's better than a spear most of the time.
When you get to the den kill the two shopkeepers, you get all their inventory and can sell it later on. Also, watch out for the kids in the den, they will try to steal everything from you...Makes it hard not to be a child killer...
