Anyone else find no excitement in FO4?

Post by Zhunter5000 » Fri Nov 02, 2018 12:25 pm

I wish I could enjoy FO4, but I just don't. Anyone else like this?

I played it a lot when it first was released. Primarily I was drawn to it since I was born and raised in the area. Actually Weymouth which is next town south from Quincy which is in the game to the south most border. But after playing it for awhile I did get pretty bored with it and haven't played it for well over a year or so. Right now I'm just patiently waiting for TTW 3.x to finally get released. Though I might give the New California mod a shot to kill some time.

It's pretty terrible imo. The only reason I still have it installed is to play around with Sim Settlements. I've had more fun with that mod than anything included in the base game.

I was happy in that they at least vastly improved the gunplay, although after playing PUBG I now kinda wish they had a similar system in regards to shooting mechanics. I just really like the way shooting was done in that game - not only did you have camera recoil to deal with, but the actual animation kick of the gun when it fired also affected the point of impact. But at least gunplay was drastically improved and AI was a bit smarter.

But I quickly got bored with it - a dialogue system that became a meme, crappy characters who give you no real choice (a scientific enclave untouched by the war beneath our feet this whole time, with a possible treasure trove of information, resources and technology? Have to blow it up, no ifs, ands or buts.) and the one thing that really activated my almonds: magical effects for weapons and objects that really should've been in Skyrim or something rather than America's favourite post nuclear role playing game. Item modding was a mixed bag, it was great that we were no longer restricted to 3 weapon mods and that clothing could be modded as well, but I found it pretty silly that advanced crystal focusing arrays and whatnot could be crafted from junk in the wasteland. Always wanted mods to be found on vendors, as well as being found as loot, both in containers and on NPCs depending on their value. Plus I started getting the idea that the meta was basically just 'pick the bottom-most receiver in the list because that does the most damage' and I felt like weapons should've had a mix of both universal (e.g. optics, muzzle attachments for conventional guns) and weapon-specific mods (e.g. grenade MG high speed kits, plasma rifle magnetic accelerators)

And no ammo types...why?? Has anyone found an official response as to why they went backwards in this area? I was very surprised that they didn't even carry this over, combined with other things missing from NV its almost as if they want to pretend NV doesn't exist.

I heard of TTW for a while now and thought it was pretty cool but years ago and during the time of Requiem for the Capital Wasteland, there were still a lot of kinks to be worked out so I held back on it. Decided to try it after I first looked at this site and stopped playing FO4, haven't looked back since, especially with v3.2 coming out soon and F4NV in the works.

Yeah. Honestly the game collects dust now.

With the right mods Fallout 4 can be a bit better experience than vanilla, but it still feels like the game seriously falls short of it's potential, as if it could and should have been much better, but it simply got a halfway done treatment by the devs.. F4 did not learn anything from FNV, instead F4 took several unnecessary steps backwards with core gameplay mechanics and in many cases fails to give reasonable player choices and consequences with the main story. At minimum, it should be possible (though challenging) to conquer or take over any of the factions, including the Institute. Content cut from Fallout 4 does include dialogue hinting at eventually taking over the Brotherhood of Steel by kicking Elder Maxsons butt in a duel - Does not seem like a smart decision to cut such an interesting storyline entirely from game - Perhaps the game actually was rushed out, and there was no time to properly finish the different faction storylines with alternative endings.

It's not all bad though, F4 does some things nicely, like fairly interesting companion characters with their own stories and quests. Also as was mentioned, the shooting itself is very good and smooth, although weapons do have some completely unnecessary oddities like weird caliber choices (Combat Rifle about the size of a Browning BAR fires .45 ACP pistol ammo by default, really?), seriously nerfed tommy guns and miniguns, and calling what is obviously a light machinegun erroneusly an Assault Rifle - Also these seem like mistakes which could have been caused by rushing out the game before it was really ready.

As it is currently, I do occasionally play F4 a bit, especially to test some new mod for it, but mostly I am just waiting for the great mods like F4NV, Cascadia and F4 Miami to release for Fallout 4.

..Still, it could have been much worse, at least the Fallout 4 we got is not a completely gutted shell of a Fallout game without any living NPCs, no dialogue system at all and forced multiplayer mode only with no mods or private servers..

Or a game that doesn't have the server checking to make sure clients have matching files...

Yeah I agree, but even with mods it just doesn't feel right. However I would love to see FO3, and NV both made with these graphics. Not FO4NV but remastered.

Combat plays out more smoothly and the game is a lot more stable even with 200+ mods installed, but the story itself is not that appealing and leaves out a lot of the choices and RPG elements you'd expect from a Fallout game. Companions are more interesting to have around too, but you have a limit to one which sucks unless you got a mod for that too. 76 sounds interesting in itself, but doesn't look that exciting either honestly.
Yeah the new ones are kind of meh for me

I know folks here don't like FO4 and I don't care about it myself either, but I do love some of the assets in there! Stuff like the clutter and furniture look like fun. I really like the milk machines for instance. Since it's much more foused on crafting they got all kinds of fun stuff to collect and break down, I'm kinda jealous of it lol!
