Replacing static objects - best practice?

HI all,
I started work on a Fallout 4 style TTW crafting mod - mostly as a learning exercise for myself.
I wanted to make a lot more of the static 'junk' items scrappable for materials, much like they are in Fallout 4, but whilst I can obviously just use search and replace in the GECK to swap out statics with my own versions, it occurred to me that any other mod which used the vanilla statics wouldn't be compatible so - is there a 'best practice' method for doing this, perhaps a scripted appproach that replaces items?
