Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 discussion

Post by thermador » Fri Jan 25, 2013 3:57 pm

I played through Fallout 1 for the first time last fall, and I'm currently in the middle of my first Fallout 2 game. They are great games, totally worthy of restoration.  Here are my notes on playing them.

For Fallout 1, definitely get Fallout FIXT, a package of fixes for the game that is pretty essential - it includes a lot of bug fixes and a few 'must have' mods like restored content (stuff left out of the game) and graphics upgrades.  It's a very well-done package that will solve a lot of annoyances.  In Bethesda terms, it's like the "unofficial patch" mods for Oblivion - can't live with out it.  It's easy to install with an EXE file.  Here is a list of areas and associated quests for Fallout 1 - warning, contains spoilers.

For Fallout 2, definitely get the Fallout 2 Restoration Project, which is a similar idea to Fallout FIXT.  It restores a lot of deleted content, fixes hundreds of bugs (includes the unnofficial patch mod by the same author), and upgrades the graphics. It's also easy to install with an EXE file.  There is also a guide for the restored content, which is quite a bit more than what was restored in Fallout FIXT.  Here is a list of areas and associated quests for Fallout 2 - warning, contains spoilers.

If you don't play with those mod packs, you're going to encounter many more bugs, and have issues playing the games on modern graphics cards and modern monitor resolutions.

Yeah I know, its a big dream and much much harder than TTW. If we can get a big enough team, though, it might be possible.

With a project like that its GOTTA be broken up into manageable pieces. So we will do the initial area and all quests self contained in that area, and release it to test. Then move on to the next area and do all self contained quests and all quests related to previously finished areas. I think recreating the game wont be too hard (I've never played, remember) older games usually don't have the density of FO3 and FNV (once again, uneducated, correct me if I'm wrong). I think the hard part will be the wasteland at large and then ADDING appropriate content to flesh it out and make it feel as dense as FO3/NV.

Educated guesses all the way through, really need to play the originals, over and over again, to truly understand what an undertaking.

Luckily, we don't need to worry about merging FO1 and 2 with 3 and NV considering the time gaps between the former 2 and the latter 2. Though it would be awesome to somehow track choices and consequences throughout the games, but that is getting way too far in the future to think about.

I played FO1 and FO2 so many

Post by Risewild » Fri Jan 25, 2013 3:58 pm

I played FO1 and FO2 so many times in the past, and it was thanks to them that I got sucked into FO3 and FNV when they came out too. A bit sad I can't mod or use GECK to help you guys with such a huge work, but I leave my services as a tester for the future although until something of that magnitude could reach a testing stage will take a looooong time I am quite sure, but hey I can wait .

Wait, what?  You're planning on building Fallout 1 and 2?  That sounds awesome!

Though to be honest, I doubt you would succeed.  Huge mod additions like that almost never come to fruition.  Of course, I don't know how big Fallout 1 and 2 were.  Would it require a large area and a lot of quests that would need to be created from scratch?

Also, aren't most classic weapons already recreated in mods?  I think FWE had several.

Yeah on the plus side, you

Yeah on the plus side, you could easily use all of the assets from FO3 and FNV to remake fallout 1 and 2. Bethsoft and obsidian actually did a pretty good job sticking with the artistic style and the lore. On the downside, all of the worldspaces, NPCs, quests, scripts, etc would have to be built by hand. Then comes the difficult issue of voicing dialogue... but, given enough time, it COULD be done. I played through fallout 1 for the first time last fall, and I'm currently in the middle of my first fallout 2 game. They are great games, totally worthy of restoration.

Yeah, I'd definitely recommend playing Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 at some point, definitely before any conversion work is done smiley

I think your strategy would work pretty well - go area by area, since that's how the games are built.  They are open-world, but they are really designed to be played in a fairly-specific order - otherwise, you're going to do a lot of backtracking later and you're going to run into some tough enemies too early.

I will post a WIP thread here

Post by sesom » Fri Jan 25, 2013 9:30 pm

I will post a WIP thread here and a new developer video with more details soon. A lot is already done and a ton is still to make ;) .

We use the same method in breaking the areas down and making one by one. At the moment Vault 13 (I mean the revisit here), Vault 15 are nearly done, Shady Sands is at 80% and Junktown is about 50% completed. Other areas are started but only at a very basic level. With nearly done I mean quests, NPCs and location so fully playable. Voice acting is not our primary focus atm. It's a thing for the final stage.

We had to finish a lot of groundwork first before we could start with implementing quests and areas. For example the follower system is nearly completed, it's the same with the new player character while reading the book, FO1 creatures are done and we have now a semi (very semi ;) ) automated way to convert dialog and quests to FNV (and there is a lot of dialog to handle in FO1).

You are correct "Fallout The Story" has a node based map now with random encounters while traveling (I am implementing the random encounter maps right now btw. ;) ) . The location of the book has changed btw. in our developer version it can be found more logical now in the old Mormon fort in Freeside.

We try to stay as true to the original as possible (art style, overall feel & balance).

The founder and leader of the project is Arcoolka (he made RTS). I am one of the main contributors to it, that's why "Arcseso" is used as modders name on Nexus. He can't work on the "The Story" at the moment (RL reasons) but is available and I am pretty much alone working at the project right now.

So any help would be very appreciated.

@Risewild: I will come to you with a request for (very!!!!) Alpha testing soon. Glad to hear that you know FO1 good.
